四川音乐学院创建于1939年。是中国西南地区唯一所集音乐、美术、舞蹈、戏剧、传媒、工业设计、艺术理论、艺术教育、艺术管理九大学科为一体的多学科、多层次综合高等艺术院校。2008年,在全国高校教学工作水平评估中，被评为“优秀学校”。

学校有本部和新都两个校区。设30个教学院系，一所独立学院——绵阳艺术学院。有28个本科专业，125个专业方向。艺术学理论、音乐与舞蹈学、美术学三个一级学科硕士学位授予权。首批获得国务院学位委员会批准的艺术硕士（MFA）授予权。2009年开始与四川大学联合招收培养文学与音乐传播学博士生。2013年获批博士后创新实践基地。

学校占地1156亩，在校生14000余人。拥有固定资产12亿元。有副高以上职称的教师413人，其中教授125人，副教授288人。有国务院特殊津贴专家12人，省学术和技术带头人10人。拥有文献丰富的图书馆、校史馆、陈列馆和声像馆。学校拥有“五所一室四院五中心两会”研究机构，分别是：高教研究所、乐器研究所、音乐研究所、流行音乐研究所、美术研究所；录音合成与计算机音乐实验室；中国非遗研究院、藏羌文化研究院、钢琴艺术研究院、小提琴艺术研究院；作曲技术研究中心、音乐治疗实验研究中心、音乐教育研究中心、古琴艺术研究中心、王光祈学术研究中心、四川音乐学院社科联、四川省音乐文学学会。

近五年来，师生在国际、国内重大比赛和评奖中获得国际奖项209项，国内奖项1176项，科研立项83项，出版学术专著近100部。获国家科技进步二等奖，国家文化部科研发明奖两项，省级科技奖20项。国家教育部、中宣部、团中央授予的奖项达17项。学院《音乐探索》入选为全国高校优秀期刊、CSSCI来源期刊、中国核心学术期刊。为我国的文化大发展大繁荣做出了显著贡献。
