火宫殿建于明朝万历五年(公元1577年)。又名"乾元宫",是一座祭祀火神的庙宇。清乾隆十二年(公元1747年),清道光六年(公元1826年)曾两次重修,祭祀火神庙会、唱庙戏,引来无数经营小吃、卖艺人,形成长沙最热闹的文化娱乐场所。后毁于1938年"文夕大火",1940年重建,从此一改小吃摊担朝出暮归为集中在"南通"、"北达"、"东成"、"西就"四线铺面经营,直至1949年长沙解放。1956年,火宫殿48家饮食商铺进行公私合营,成立火宫殿饮食店。1958年4月12日,毛主席视察火宫殿,在长沙市政府的大力支持下,1959年对火宫殿进行全面改建,东西两向各建二层楼房一栋,将东栋经营湘菜、西栋经营小吃、早茶,经营规模进一步扩大、品种进一步增多,产品质量进一步提高。1993年,火宫殿被国家内贸部认定为首批"中华老字号"。

火宫殿随着改革开放的深入,2000年成立长沙火宫殿有限公司。为落实市政府建设以火宫殿为龙头的坡子街名食民俗商业街的精神,2001年公司兼并长沙湘江文具厂,对火宫殿进行了一次全面改造扩建。重建火神庙,增设小戏台、早茶、小吃、湘菜营业面积增加到4000M2,早茶包点、风味小吃、传统湘菜品种增加到200余种,火宫殿企业知名度、美誉度进一步提升,社会效益、经济效益一年一个台阶的递增。

2006年,公司研究决定恢复火宫殿原貌,拆除1959年建设的火宫殿东栋,扩充火宫殿庙坪,恢复原有的古戏台、普慈阁、财神殿。并购买相邻的“火神舫”,己中供应早茶、小吃、湘菜。一、二楼为早茶、小吃厅,三、四楼为湘菜宴会厅、豪华包厢。使火宫殿营业面积达6000M2,早茶包点、风味小吃达300余种,每晚8点~凌晨2点为夜宵,传统湘菜、口味特色菜、十大《名流宴席》,其品种达100余个。深受顾客喜爱。2001年中国烹饪协会授予火宫殿“中华餐饮名店”称号、2006年,国家商务部再次认定火宫殿为“中华老字号”。2007年,国家商务局认定火宫殿为“中国驰名商标”,成为湖南餐饮业零的突破。同年,国家文化部将“火神庙会”列入国家级非物质文化遗产。成为长沙餐饮品种最全、出品品质最高、服务质量最优的餐饮龙头名店。如今,到火宫殿一游,可观火庙雄风、可听戏曲弹词、可吃传统早茶、可品风味小吃、可尝正宗湘菜,是长沙独具一格的旅游、休闲好出处。
