北大医院创建于1915年，是国内较早创办的国立医院，也是国内建立的临床医学院之一。北大医院前身为民国教育部批准北京医科专门学校设立附属诊察所;1946年随北京医学院与北京大学合并，由此得名“北大医院”;此后经历院系调整，2000年北京大学与北京医科大学两校再次合并，医院随之更名为“北京大学第一医院”。2008年成为中央保健基地医院。

百余年来，医院拥有着一批专业学科以及诊疗技术，如国内首创小儿科(1940)、泌尿外科(1946)、肾脏病专业(1950)、综合医院心血管病房(50年代)、小儿神经专业(50年代)等;在国内开展改进静脉麻醉(1951)、先心手术(50年代)、肾移植(1960)、引进人工晶体植入术(1983)、冠心病介入性治疗(1986)、第一台自体血液回收机(1997)、胸腔镜手术(1992)、微创切口肺移植(2005)、经皮心室重建术(2013)等，为我国的医学事业作出了贡献。

北大医院设有36个临床科室，16个医技科室，6个研究所;共有64个病房，1574张病床。日均门诊量1万余人次，年收治病人8.5万余人，手术4.4万余例。医院在职职工近3500人，其中正高级职称240余人，副高级职称330余人，我院泌尿外科郭应禄教授于1999年当选为中国工程院院士。

我院还承担着全市6万余人的公费医疗，以及占北京八分之一的干部保健任务。在我院的就诊患者中，有1/3是来自全国各地的疑难病患者。

作为北京大学历史悠久的附属临床医学院，近四十年来医院累计培养本科生近3000人，研究生3000余人，其中包括硕士近1700人，博士1300余人， 博士后近70人。目前医院每年承担着大量的教学任务，其中包括医学部8年制临床专业学生同期在院260余人，研究生同期在院近600人，护理系本科生同期在院260人左右。同时，医院还承担着繁重的继续教育任务，每年在医院参加各级住院医师培训、进修、继续教育项目及各类考试的人员共计4万余人次。

近十年来，医院累计发表论文1.1万余篇，SCI(即《科学引文索引》)收录论文近2200篇，其中部分发表在包括New Engl J Med、Lancet、Blood、Am J Hum Genet等国际期刊上。
