源远流长、名誉九州的发展历程。明朝末年，兵荒马乱，有“叶神仙”之称的安徽神医在汉阳古琴台行医卖药。适逢岳州瘟疫，“叶神仙”派儿子叶文机前往应诊，其高超医术深得驻军简亲王赏识。在简亲王的资助下，明崇祯十年（1637年）叶文机在武汉开设“葉開泰号”，寓意“叶氏悬壶开号，唯求国泰民安”。在其后将近400年的发展历程中，所制名药参桂鹿茸丸、小金丹等是进贡宫廷的御药，其它产品如八宝光明散、虎骨追风酒、梅花点舌丹也都名闻遐迩，远销南洋。据道光年间叶调元《汉口竹枝词》记载，葉開泰丸药被称作“皆俗所引重者”。

1953年6月1日，由叶氏家族经营了316年的葉開泰号制药部分被改造为“健民药厂”，“葉開泰”第十代传人叶蓉斋出任董事长。
