出生于意大利南部拿坡里(Naples)小镇Bonito的萨尔瓦多·菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo),家中共有14个兄弟姊妹,虽然Salvatore九岁时已辍学,由于自小已梦想成为一个鞋匠,他于11岁便当上鞋匠学徒,并于13岁已开设店铺,为其鞋业传奇奏出序曲。

其后萨尔瓦多·菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 前往美国加州的圣巴巴拉开办了一家补鞋店,并设计电影所用的鞋履,令他的名字开始流传于明星界。当时萨尔瓦多·菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 更到洛杉矶大学修读人体解剖学,务求制作出优质的鞋子。

1923年,他在好莱坞开设“Hollywood Boot Shop”,与不少的电影制片合作,令萨尔瓦多·菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 的名字更广为人知。1927年Salvatore回归意大利,并在佛罗伦斯开设店铺。

萨尔瓦多·菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 的成功在于其对产品质素的坚持,即使在生产过程机械化的今天,产品全数采用手工缝制,而且每名技术人员更只负责一个工序。

1951年,Salvatore Ferragamo完成了时装表演。9年后,Salvatore逝世,其妻Wanda Miletti与六名子女接手生意,将Ferragamo扩展至男女时装、手袋、丝巾、领带、香水系列等,发展成一家“Dressed From Head To Foot”的时装品牌。

其后,菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 更发展至一个时装集团,在1996年取得法国时装品牌Emanuel Ungaro的控制权,1997年又与BVLGARI合作经营企业,发展香薰与化妆品。1998年,Ferragamo更与Luxottica合作推出眼镜系列,令菲拉格慕 (Salvatore Ferragamo) 业务更多元化。

1998年,Salvatore Ferragamo便开始举办了世界青年鞋款设计选拔大赛,鼓励对鞋款设计有兴趣的年轻学生,及希望藉着这个比赛,激励他们继续朝设计方向努力。
