国胶的出现至今约有1800年的历史，但是可能是出于熬制国胶的“权威性”，还是别的什么原因，自三国以来直到清朝初期，国胶熬胶技师因受于皇命，其熬制技术更是“秘而不宣”，只能通过口传身教，不见片言只语的文字留下，即便是这些“国宝级”的熬胶师也仍然是“榜上无名”。

明朝之后东阿县的政治中心已经转移到了当时的谷城镇，国胶熬制中心岳家庄开始有了自我发展阿胶的机遇。岳家庄的熬胶师们开始思考如何将国胶做到“与民同享”。

1810年，国胶师张顺开设“和顺堂”，准备打破皇家垄断的决心，开始由单一的家庭作坊转向生产经营。

张顺成为有文字记载的国胶祖师。

张顺“和顺堂”的出现，不仅仅是国胶生产开始转向“市场经济”时代，更重要的是，张顺打破了熬胶技艺传承的旧传统。张顺开始打破旧习，“因才利导”开始有选择地、大规模地纳收门徒。自此后，在张顺的带领下先后有刘怀贤的“宏济堂”；刘广合的“德成堂”；刘爱云的“魁兴堂”；张贵芳的“同兴堂”；司朝风的“延年堂”；刘学成的“庆余堂”等16家阿胶堂号开张营业，国胶熬胶技艺传承和发展达到了历史最鼎盛时期。

1939年7月，阿城镇被日军占领后，烧杀掳掠，民不聊生，阿胶生产受到破坏。国胶熬胶技师有的改行，有的到处到处流浪，有的成了某些阿胶厂的普通熬胶师。

自此，国胶技艺成为流散于民间的瑰宝。

2004年，延年堂司朝风的后人司家勇，在整理家谱的时候，发现，原来自己是国胶宗师的后人，这时候，司家勇作为房地产开发公司老总的已经取得了辉煌的成绩，但是，在研究祖训时，深刻领会到，虽然自己从事房地产行业也是在为国家的经济建设做贡献，但是司家勇先生深深感悟到，自己不能忘记“修桥、铺路、建庙、施粥、救人”的古训。于是决定投入巨资建立阿胶生产企业，并开始全国范围内的国胶熬制技艺传人的寻访工作。

功夫不负有心人，现在，掌握了国胶熬制秘技的宏济堂传人、福兴堂传人、延年堂传人等8大国胶技艺嫡传技师悉数归于该企业。并开始了国胶熬制技艺的收集、整理工作。目前，已经充分挖掘并掌握了“挂旗”、“吊猴”等关键技艺。

2010年，万事具备的司家勇，正式将自己的阿胶企业命名为“山东东阿国胶堂阿胶药业股份公司”，一个以恢复国胶生产为目标的企业，正式挂牌。
