南翔小笼闻名遐迩,由嘉定南翔镇黄明贤于同治年间创制设店专卖,店名:日华轩,该店后毁于日军轰炸,黄明贤妻弟南翔镇人员吴翔升看到上海工商业蓬勃发展,老城隍庙集市空前繁荣,遂于光绪二十六年(公元1900)携制作师傅赵秋荣,承袭祖传工艺,选九曲桥畔原船舫厅旧址,创设了专营南翔小笼的“长兴楼”,后店名改为“南翔馒头店”,专营南翔小笼,以皮薄、馅丰、上口一包卤汁而名扬四方。

南翔小笼因制作精、质量佳、桂冠频摘。1989年荣获原中华人民共和国商业部优质产品“金鼎奖”;1995年被上海市人民政府财贸办公室认定为“上海名特小吃”;1998年又被中国烹饪协会认为为“中华名小吃”;2000年再次被国家国内贸易局评定“中国名点”;2001年,中国烹饪协会评定为“中华餐饮名店”;2002年,中国烹饪协会评定为“中国名点”;2003年,上海物价局、上海市委、上海市技监局、上海市消费者协会评定为“价格信得过单位”;2003年第五届全国烹饪技术比赛中荣获“南翔小笼”金奖,2004年8月,参加世界烹饪大赛又获二枚金牌,2005年度,又获得上海市著名商标、中国商业名牌企业、全国商业顾客满意企业,2006年度获得上海名牌企业、上海老字号、上海非物质文化遗产,因而风靡申城,饮誉海内外。

南翔馒头店自1990年来经过三次扩建,老店旧貌换新颜。步入该店犹如踏上古朴典雅的游船,铺面为加工生产和外卖南翔小笼,二楼设四个餐厅:“船舫厅”、“长兴楼”、“鼎兴楼”、“瑞鑫楼”风格各异、环境幽雅、座位舒适,凭窗眺望,园林风光和市井风貌映现眼前,是都市观光旅游和美食享受的好去处。
