西安翻译学院由我国当代教育家、民办教育拓荒者丁祖诒先生创办。学校座落在西安市南郊风景秀丽的终南山下，其前身为创建于1987年的西安翻译培训学院。2000年经陕西省人民政府批准成立西安翻译职业学院，实施全日制高等职业教育。2005年经教育部批准升格为本科高校，更名为西安翻译学院。2009年，获得学士学位授予权。2013年顺利通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估。

学校始终坚持“育人为本、德育为先、能力为重、全面发展”、“办学以教师为本，教学以学生为本”的办学理念；坚持“质量立校、人才强校、科研促校、特色兴校”办学思路；坚持“不以营利为目的，取之于学，用之于学”公益性办学原则；坚持以“高尚教育”为引领，以“读书、做人、变革、奋进”为校训，实施“外语+专业+创新创业技能”和“专业+外语+创新创业技能”的应用型人才培养模式，培养服务区域经济社会发展需要的应用型高级专门人才。

学校下设亚欧语言学院、英文学院、商学院、教育学院、工程技术学院、文学院、艺术学院、健康学院、翻译研修学院、继续教育学院和创新创业学院11个二级学院、思想政治教学部和体育教学部2个教学部和公共艺术教育中心、专设国防教育教研室。学院开设本科专业36个，专科专业24个，涵盖文、经、管、工、艺、法、教育、医学等八大学科门类。

学校坚持开放办学，积极开展校际交流与合作。与西北大学、解放军西安通信学院、延安大学等省内大学建立帮扶关系，与加拿大菲沙河谷大学、美国圣荷西大学、日本福州外国语学院等十几所国（境）外院校建立交流与合作关系。近年来，有1000余人赴国（境）外攻读硕士学位；有18名师生先后赴东欧及澳大利亚做访问学者和国家公派留学。学院多次组织师生参加国际青年发展峰会论坛，还聘请欧盟议会议员Robert George Karthus博士等多位国内外专家教授来院作报告，不断加强学术交流与合作。学校同美国地方政府建立了学生带薪赴美实习的合作关系，先后有1200余名学生赴美国实习。
