首创“夏士莲”译名的是文化界名人、出版界元老张元济。1916年前后，英国人柯尔在上海租界开了一家宝威药行，销售从英国运来的药物和化妆品，并在商务印书馆印刷宣传品和说明书。为扩大销售，柯尔请时任商务印书馆经理的张元济把英文商标“Hazeline”译成中文，张元济就把“Hazeline”译为“夏士莲”，并将“HazelineSnow”译为“夏士莲雪花膏”，这两个信、达、雅的译名就这么流传了近百年。

把“Hazeline”译为“夏士莲”，张元济不过是一时即兴之作，信手拈来。而其一生之为人，用“夏士莲”这3字来形容也正合适——士林中的一朵夏日莲花，品质高洁，人格高雅，出污泥而不染。
