It was jointly established by the State General Administration of physical education and the people's Government of Hubei Province. Wuhan Institute of physical education, one of the first batch of Full-time Ordinary Colleges and universities in China, was originally named Zhongnan Institute of physical education. It was founded in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province in 1953, moved to Wuhan City, Hubei Province in 1955, and renamed Wuwu in 1956 Han Institute of physical education. The school covers an area of 1820.6 mu, with 11023 full-time undergraduates, 1177 postgraduates and 26 international students. The school now has 19 teaching units, including 15 institutes, 2 departments and 2 schools, with 26 undergraduate majors.
