学院与成立于120多年前的岭南大学有着深厚的历史渊源。1888年，美国友好人士在广州创办了格致书院（岭南大学前身），1926年，校名改为私立岭南大学。1927年岭南大学收归中国人自办，钟荣光博士为首任华人校长。1952年，在全国院系调整中，岭南大学有关科系分别并入中山大学和其他高等院校。

1988年，值岭南大学百年盛典之际，国家教委宣布批准成立中山大学岭南（大学）学院。
