都锦生织锦形成于1921年，由我国著名爱国实业家都锦生先生独创，是杭州织锦的代表，经过八十余年的发展和创新，都锦生织锦目前已形成了以像景织锦、装饰织锦、服用织锦为代表的三大系列，一千六百四十余个花色品种，已成为我国最具代表性的名锦之一。

都锦生织锦坚持用传统工艺设计生产,大多为纯手工制作，一般产品都要经过58道手工工序才能完成，由于做工精致、色彩瑰丽、质地细腻、手感丰满、极富民族特色等特点，被誉为神奇的“东方艺术之花”。都锦生织锦曾代表杭州传统织锦工艺参加1926年在美国费城举办的世界博览会，并一举荣获金奖；1929年参加首届西湖博览会，荣获特等奖和优秀奖；并在1979年、1982年、1984年多次荣获国家金质奖、银质奖。都锦生也于1990年和2010年先后二次被国家内贸部和国家商务部认定为“中华老字号”。

都锦生产品通过了国际ISO9001质量管理体系认证，生产全过程中采用了先进的技术工艺手段和科学的组织管理标准，在设计、开发、生产、销售和售后服务各道环节都能提供最好的质量保证。都锦生还是国家标准《织锦工艺制品》的起草单位之一，由都锦生申报的《杭州织锦技艺》更是被列入了国家级非物质文化遗产代表作名录。

都锦生织锦从五十年代开始就被定为国家礼品之一，毛泽东主席等党和国家领导人曾多次以都锦生织锦作为礼品赠送外国首脑和贵宾。敬爱的周恩来总理在1957年视察都锦生丝织厂时曾指出“都锦生织锦是中国工艺品中一朵奇葩，是国宝，要保留下去，要后继有人。”

都锦生丝织厂从1953年开始就被列为外事接待单位、现为杭州市的国际旅游访问点之一，几十年来曾接待了大批来自世界各地的国家元首和政府首脑，周恩来、朱德、叶剑英等老一辈革命家和胡锦涛、吴邦国、习近平、朱镕基、李瑞环等党和国家领导人也都曾先后前往都锦生视察并指导工作。

都锦生地处杭州市的商贸旅游中心地段，距西湖仅百米之遥，都锦生织锦博物馆和都锦生故居都是杭州市的著名旅游景点,也是杭州市的爱国主义教育基地。都锦生织锦现已被浙江省人民政府列入了第一批浙江省非物质文化遗产代表作名录。都锦生织锦也列入了杭州市传统工艺美术重点保护品种和技艺名录。
