华东师范大学是由国家举办，教育部主管，教育部与上海市人民政府共建的综合性研究型大学。学校成立于1951年10月16日。

学校目前设有3个学部：地球科学学部、教育学部、经济与管理学部；27个全日制学院：人文社会科学学院、马克思主义学院、法学院、社会发展学院、外语学院、对外汉语学院、心理与认知科学学院、体育与健康学院、经济学院、工商管理学院、公共管理学院、统计学院、传播学院、艺术学院、设计学院、理工学院、物理与材料科学学院、化学与分子工程学院、地理科学学院、城市与区域科学学院、生态与环境科学学院、生命科学学院、信息科学技术学院、计算机科学与软件工程学院、国际汉语教师学院、教师教育学院、数据科学与工程学院；2个书院：孟宪承书院、经管书院；8个实体研究院（所、实验室）：思勉人文高等研究院、国际关系与地区发展研究院、河口海岸科学研究院、国际航运物流研究院、城市发展研究院、国家教育宏观政策研究院、艺术研究所；1个管理型学院：开放教育学院/上海教师发展学院。另有设在学校的教育部中学校长培训中心。

截至2017年3月，在校全日制本专科生14，517人，其中本科生14，413人，专科生104人；在校研究生16，222人，其中博士研究生3,236人，硕士研究生12，986人（含免费师范生教育硕士3,650人）；留学生4，535人。学校有教职工4，034人，其中专任教师2，248人。教授及其他高级职称教师1，807人。学校主要校区为闵行校区（地址为上海市东川路500号）和中山北路校区（地址为上海市中山北路3663号），校园占地总面积约207公顷。

学校注重国际合作交流，先后与法国高师集团、美国纽约大学、弗吉尼亚大学、康奈尔大学、澳大利亚昆士兰大学、巴西圣保罗大学、日本东京大学等大学建立了战略合作伙伴关系，与世界200余所高校、科研机构签订了学术合作与交流协议。与法国高师集团成立中法联合研究院、联合研究生院；与美国纽约大学联合创办的上海纽约大学，是具有独立法人资格的中美合作创办的大学；与法国里昂商学院合作共建亚欧商学院；与以色列海法大学合作共建转化科学与技术联合研究院。学校设有国家汉办所属的国际汉语教师研修基地，作为中方合作院校建设8所孔子学院。

The school has an international Chinese teacher training base affiliated to Hanban, which serves as a Chinese Cooperative college to build 8 Confucius Institutes.
