皖新传媒前身为安徽省新华书店。2002年9月，经中共安徽省委、安徽省人民政府同意和中宣部、新闻出版总署批准，在原安徽省新华书店、安徽省外文书店基础上成立安徽新华书店集团有限公司（2005年更名为安徽新华发行集团有限公司）；2008年2月，原安徽新华发行集团有限公司整体改制为安徽新华传媒股份有限公司（以下简称“公司”）。2010年1月18日，公司在上海证券交易所上市（股票简称：皖新传媒，股票代码：601801）。
